HISTORY

"Our little piece of Heaven," claimed an Australian guest while vacationing here. War Hill Inn sits just a short distance from Williamsburg city limits, with the house located near the center of our 32-acre family farm. Surrounded by forests, orchards, vineyards, and gardens that complement spacious grounds, this quiet retreat envelops you in nature's soundtrack as crickets, cicadas, frogs, and owls serenade you to sleep.

The Manor House

The Manor House, built in 1968 by a Colonial Williamsburg architect, features carefully sourced historic materials:

  • Recycled building materials from Pennsylvania's Dutch Country

  • Wood paneling from trees harvested on the property

  • Wide-heart pine floors from an old schoolhouse

  • Bricks reclaimed from Main Street in Norfolk

  • Stairs from a Lutheran church

  • Overhead beams from a historic barn

  • An 8-foot-long oak mantle estimated to be over 200 years old

The Lee Family

Originally built as the Lee family home, the property has operated as a family business since 1986. Dr. Bill Lee (retired veterinarian) and his wife Shirley (whose love of antiques and folk art is evident throughout) raised their family here. Their son Will and wife, Cherie currently manage the Inn, continuing the tradition of transforming guests into honorary Lee family members.

Namesake

War Hill Inn is named for the historic land on which it stands. On June 26, 1781, a Revolutionary War battle occurred here, giving rise to the name "War Hill."
